If you work or volunteer in conservation, wildlife management, or ecology, the biggest challenge you face is one of communication.
At the very root of our work, conservation is a game of how convincing we can be to people beyond our circle of understanding. By ourselves, we can only do so much to prevent the rampant biodiversity decline that defines the modern era. Species are plummeting towards extinction, habitats are being cleared for infrastructure development, and what remains is being infiltrated by invasive species.
All around, we are seeing severe levels of loss and degradation to populations, species, and ecosystems. And what can we do about it? Well, by ourselves, not a whole lot. You and I only have so much time in our days; and don’t get me started on the financial burden. If you’re extremely disciplined outside of your 9-5 (AND earning more than the living wage) you may be able to maintain a few pest trapping lines here and there, or plant some native trees on your weekends to expand the tiny forest remnants that persist in your area. And don’t get me wrong, this is a noble act, and every contribution makes a difference. But we can’t single-handedly win this battle against biodiversity decline. We need help.
There is so much untapped potential out there in the world. There are people who are searching for community, meaning, and something which they can contribute to and be proud of. There are also organisations and people that have experienced substantial financial success and are sitting on more money than they know what to do with. Here’s the challenge: Many of these people and organisations are unaware, or not yet convinced, that putting their time and resources towards conservation is the answer to their search for a higher purpose. It is our job to convince them.
Accordingly, we need to employ more than just our knowledge of native ecosystems to achieve maximum effectiveness as conservationists. We also need to implement robust communication strategies to acquire the resources and manpower necessary to achieve our vision.
I’m Jordan, Ecologist and Creative Director of Prisere—an organisation that blends the boundaries between nature and digital communication. I bring real-world experience in working with endangered wildlife and threatened ecosystems. I also bring a technical understanding of digital content creation which spans graphic design, photography, videography, web design, and map creation.
My goal with Prisere is to prepare conservationists like yourself with these valuable digital skillsets to improve your outreach. Because with a solid modern content creation strategy, you could gain more volunteers, and win more grants to fund your vision.
Now, if you don’t run your own conservation group and simply volunteer for one, you’re not off the hook. You can implement these skills to help your local group be more successful. Alternatively, you can show off your own volunteering adventures to your own social media followers and get them intrigued to join you for the next community volunteer day.
Remember this: If you keep your conservation efforts to yourself, no one else will notice the importance of the work you do or the fulfilment it brings you; and in turn, they won’t be intrigued to try it for themselves.
Share your experience. The people you might reach deserve to know what they’re missing out on.
